I am currently working on the beginnings of a disaster plan for the library. It's a little overwhelming trying to prepare for the possibilities, but after visiting Greensburg yesterday for the first time since the tornado three years ago, I am even more cognizant of the need for some preparation.
Our first step is to prepare a Pocket Response Plan for the collections. Many disasters result in water damage, so we will be looking for a refrigerated trucking service and freezer storage to house print materials if they get wet. Freezing prevents mold from setting in while the materials wait for processing to dry them out. Mold is very damaging to library materials, and spreads quickly.
We will also be asking to meet with the fire department and the police department to get their recommendations on how to respond.
I am grateful to the State Library of Kansas for developing this program. We have some great support in the state.
